Tribi Project

Project Overview

THE PROBLEM:
Users are uncomfortable talking about finances with friends and family.  This causes them to compromise with unbalanced solutions even though they’d prefer to manage finances in a more preemptive manner.

THE SOLUTION:
Our app was designed to balance and streamline group or paired payments.   This app can help individuals address group expenses so that users make more group or paired purchases.  They will continue to make payments with the same groups and manage how much money they have as a group or pair more often.

A Friendlier Way to Group Pay

Interview Insights

What we found out is most people sort out payment after the group activity is done. As of right now, this is the norm.  This puts people in a financial obligation to their peers.  This way of group payment disregards how people feel about certain bills and contributions causing stress. In the end, people still end up paying a portion and sometimes more just to avoid awkwardness within the group.

Affinity Diagram

We used this diagram as a tool to show specific interview insights for each potential user.  Any data that could be useful for app development were categorized by user.

Empathy Map

After the interviews were done, we developed this diagram to give us and potential investors a better idea of what kind of user this app is for.

User Persona

Towards the end of the user research stage, we came up with this profile to give me and potential investors a better idea of who the typical app user would be.

Ideation

After sifting through the interviews and making the affinity diagram, we split up the information and put them into these three categories to narrow down how to benefit the app user.

Feature Prioritization Matrix

A lot of the ideation process, especially for this app, was trying to figure out if some of the features the user wanted was even possible.  If it was possible, how difficult would it be to develop for one, secondly how much value would it bring to the experience?

Value Proposition

Tribi is an app that helps people feel comfortable and less obligated financially when it comes to delegating financial transactions within a group by handling the money owed before instead of after the social occasion.  This reduces debt- anxiety and also anxiety involving financial status amongst the user’s peers. In most cases this allows the user to decide what they can pay upfront or contribute what they are able to for the group activity unlike Venmo where money is handled after the social occasion.

Tribi Storyboard

Here is an example of a situation where Tribi can be useful.  Check out how Christina solves her problem.

Competitor Analysis

We studied our competitors to see how Tribi would compete.  Seeing what our competitors strengths and weaknesses were gave us a better idea of opportunities Tribi could take advantage of.

App Sketches

My part of the early prototyping phase was to design a concept for an invitation screen after an invite is sent to a user.

Low Fidelity Prototype

Christina receives an invite to a birthday party with details and how much everyone has "Tribi'd" so far.

When doing user test, we didn't want to give the user too much information so we could get a raw reaction to learn from.  We noticed once you say “money, transactions or group payment”, the user is already expecting a certain kind of user flow that they are use to.  As they went through the app,  it was almost like they were trying to recall certain actions from other money app that they had used before.

Christina "Tribis" her share and is able to show up and enjoy the festivities without the anxiety and stress of wondering what she owes her friends.

We saw users were confused about the payment information.  The credit card input was a little too early and came across as if the user was already agreeing to paying the amount that had been suggested.  Most apps have you input your credit card info towards the end.  During the last ideation phase, bringing a little more clarity in regards to the first credit card input screen needed to be added for a better experience.

Conclusion and Next Steps

Next steps

  • Feature to disable group members from viewing each others’ paid amounts.

  • Adjusting UI for a more relaxed tone

Tribi isn’t the fist app that deals with money but it is the first app to bring human feeling into financial experiences you have with your peers.  Money is a way of life and can’t be avoided.  It doesn’t have to be “straight to business” all the time.  Those options are out there but this is an option for those who stress out and get anxious when it comes to dealing with money with close ones.  Whether your managing the funds for a birthday party or contributing to the cause, this is a way to soften the blow ahead of time so you can enjoy your people.  Stop worrying about how to pay your friends when you should be paying attention to them.

Thanks You.
